I Want to Talk. Will You Listen? What People with Alzheimer’s Are Communicating Through Repetition

Alzheimer'sIt’s really, really hard.  In the course of an hour, mom may have asked you the same question 60 or more times.  You’re tired and deflated.  You don’t know how to manage the situation or to move on with her to something else.  You’ve learned through experience that trying to reason with her, to convince her that she remembers the answer you gave one or five minutes ago, is futile and sometimes escalates things.

Maybe this video will help.  The trainer is Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist with 25 years of experience in working with people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  Listen to what Teepa advises and resist the temptation to tell mom you’ve heard it before. There might be a way to turn repetition into reminiscing…
